Psoriasis

What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin disease that leaves a scaley, red and risen plaques on the skin. Typically your skin cells grow deep in the lower layers of your skin and they slowly rise to the surface. This process is called mitosis (cell turnover), and it normally takes about 28 days. With psoriasis however mitosis is reduced to just a few days and this causes a pile up of cells on the surface of the skin. This gives psoriasis its scaley appearance.

These scaley patches can itch or feel sore. They are often found on the elbows, knees, other parts of the legs, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of the feet but they can show up other places.

What Causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis begins when the immune system malfunctions. Psoriasis generally effects a type of white blood cell called a T cell. With psoriasis, T cells are put into action by mistake and they become so active that they set off other immune responses. This leads to the classic symptoms of psoriasis.
